  1. This is very off-the-cuff, but....

    1. Pain, bloating, distention all produce a desire to avoid food, leading to reduced nutrition

    2. Bleeding from the ulcer into the stomach will produce either bloody vomit or black stools (blood turns black when it comes into contact with stomach acid)

    3. Ulcers that cover **a lot** of area in the stomach may impact the stomach's ability to digest food, b/c any area that is ulcerated is not producing the acids that normal stomach tissue does, leading to an overally decrease in total acid in the stomach

    4. Ulcers that develop and then heal may produce "adhesions" if portions of the tissue heal in such a way that they fuse to each other. These adhesions can produce a decreased capacity in the stomach, or even restrict flow of food in and out of the stomach

    5. Ulcers can cause an increase in bowel sounds--the normal "groans," "pops," and "bubbles" heard when a stethoscope is used to listen to the stomach

    6. The final possibility, and the most serious, is bowel perforation. This happens when the ulcer has eaten all the way through the entire stomach, and a hole has been created that lets stomach contents leak out into the abdomen and into or around other organs. This is bad, as the stomach is usually full of bad bacteria found in our food. Bowel perforation causes extreme pain, lots of bleeding, and possibly very serious infection. People who have bowel perforations usually have to go to the emergency dept, undergo surgery, receive antibiotics, and stay in hospital for at least 2-3 days.

    Hope this helps you!
