  1. A solenoid is an electromagnetic device.  You can make one by wrapping a hollow form with wire, and placing either a magnet, or an iron bar attached to a spring, inside the core.  When electricity is applied, the magnet or iron bar moves.  When electricity is removed, the spring returns the iron bar to it's rest position.  If the current is reversed, the magnet will move to the opposite end.

You can usually find one in an automobile.  When you turn on the ignition, you are also turning on the starter motor, and you are turning on a solenoid, which moves a gear into position between the gas engine and the electric motor.  Once you release the key, the electric motor shuts off, and the solenoid retracts the gear, so the gasoline engine doesn't have to drive the electric motor too.
