  3. I've never heard of this book, is their anything in particular you want to discuss?

ELF (English as a Lingua Franca) - A lot of research is being done in how non-native speakers use English to communicate with other non-native speakers, and this has lead to a lot of debate about what 'standard' of English should be used to teach language.  Seeing as non-native speakers outnumber native speakers, shouldn't we be using the non-native model of English as our standard?

Eclecticism - The current 'preferred' approach to language teaching: A Communicative Approach, but regularly, drawing on a combination of the best ideas from other approaches and methods.

The Lexical Approach - The latest real attempt to define an approach, but nearing 20 years old... increased focus on vocabulary, fixed-phrases and expressions, reading, and listening; decreased focus on grammatical structures (not none, just decreased focus); and reinforcement of original theories behind The Communicative Approach (which had been heavily watered down).

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) - Pretty much language immersion, where students study other subjects purely in English - and pick English up as a side-effect due to the exposure.

TBL (Task Based Learning) - A variation of The Communicative Approach in which tasks are designed to combine receptive and productive skills, and learners are encouraged to learn through completing the tasks and reflecting on their own language use afterwards.  Being heavily pushed at the moment, and regularly featuring on http://teachingenglish.org.

'The English Corner'/'Social Club' Approach - A market driven force in which quality is sacrificed for the 'have fun and relax while learning English' appeal.  Big corporate organisations are favouring this method due to its flexibility, easily marketable nature, and lack of need for qualified teachers.

Which trends are you interested in?
