discuss the causes of discontent between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland and the significant events in this drama. If you can include some dates of these events and create some kind of timeline please.

  1. Part of the problem came about due to  Ireland's discontent at being owned by England instead of being allowed to be their own country.


  2. The friction is not necessarily about Catholic vs Protestant as British (protestant) and Irish (Catholic) rule.

    When the British invaded and occupied Ireland they imposed their religion and forbade sometimes under penalty of death Irish from practicing their own religion or even speaking their own language.

    Unless Irish "converted" to Protestantism, they were not allowed to own land or get a job, their kids could not go to schools, they worked virtually as slave labor until conditions became so bad they died or emigrated by the hundreds of thousands.

    Over the years it has been called a religious war but really it is Irish people wanting Irish home rule and people loyal to the British backed government.

    Small wonder there is friction and bad feelings. One more example of failed British colonialism.
