Within the functionalist perspective, it is assumed that all actors basically serve a function.  Everyone works together for the good of the collective whole.  Power is the ability to make someone do what you want even when they do not want to.  So, if your examining power as a functionalist perspective, individuals possessing power serve the function of control.  They exert power over the subordinates who in turn serve the interests of the dominant group.
