  1. An icon is a person or group who represents a stereo-type or standard.  For instance, the Rolling Stones are icons of rock and roll.  They represent everything good and bad about rock and roll and they are also considered one of the greatest bands of all time, so they also represent the standard of the music.

A hero is a person who does something extraordinarily self-less and courageous, often for the good of others at great risk to themselves.  Firefighters are considered heroic because they risk their lives and sometimes lose their lives to save others.

People like Mother Theresa of Calcutta can be considered both heroic, because she dedicated her life to the service of others, and an icon, because she perfectly represents the example and teachings of Jesus Christ.

  2. Hero's are known for doing good things that help people.  An Icon can be known for doing anything, maybe bad also.
