Background on autosomes....

Chomosomes contain many many genes.  Humans have 46 chromosomes - 2 are s*x chomosomes (which determine if we are male and female ) and 44 are autosomes (contain all the other genes we need to live).

Answer (for autosome bit)

When a disease is "autosomal" it just means that the genes that cause it exist on one of the automomes (non-s*x chromosomes).

Background for recessive...

We all have two copies of every gene - one from mum and one from dad.  Diseases (and many other traits) can be either dominant or recessive.  A disease which is dominant will occur even if only one copy of the gene carries the disease (and the other gene is normal).  A recessive disease will only occur if both copies of the gene carry the disease.
