Question:

Dish Network On-Demand 1080p?

Did anyone else see the 8/1 announcement for the new TurboHD from Dish Network? Although I don't see much "new" from a programming perspective, I did notice that they will have on-demand movies in 1080p. Am I reading this correctly in that I can expect by movies from the satellite dish to have the same quality as my Blu-Ray player?

  1. Is that what they're saying now?  Ya, right!

  2. If I know Dish (and I do) ... don't count on it.

  3. I doubt it.

First of all, the Dish receiver (I have the HD-DVR) only does up to 1080i - not 1080p.  Second, all programming on Dish (and DirecTV, cable, etc.) is using higher digital compression, which impacts the picture quality.

I don't even think the resulting movies would look as good as blu-ray being played on a 720p TV, much 1080p.
