  1. yeah it is

  2. There could be a variety of reasons for this. One reason may be that the person has several receivers in their home. Often times, one Dish can only provide service to three or four receivers. If  home has more than three or four TVs, they may need a second dish. Also, DVR boxes with multiple tuners count as multiple lines, so 2 dual-tuner DVRs = 4 regular receiver.

Also, the subscriber may have a package that requires the use of multiple LNBs, because they are receiving n expanded package with channels that come from multiple satellites.

  3. They may look like they're the same dish, but chances are they're not. The LNB (low noise blocker or, in layman's terms, the doorknob-looking thing in front of the dish itself) could be filtering different signals coming from different satellites.

I doubt that it's that the house has a lot of receivers. If that were the case, it would be a lot more professional (and easier!) for the installer to use a bigger multiswitch (and additional ones, if necessary) to accomodate additional receivers.

Actually, either way it's a pretty shoddy installation unless the multiple dishes are a necessity. I can see that being possible if there were trees or other obstructions making it difficult to pull information from more than one satellite at a time, but that's not very likely.
