Question:

Dish washer plumbing?

Morning all,

I really want a dishwasher, but my kitchen is too small for a full size jobbie. I've even contempltated moving just to get one... but not in this market climate, so desperation has led me to consider the small types that can go on a worksurface.

E.g.

The problem is, I only have room for it approx 8ft from the water supply. I could hide any hosing under the kitchen units (easy to get at, so no major issue), but was wondering if this might affect the dishwasher. Might the pressure/ability to access the supply be affected if it's connected with a 10ft pipe? The pipe would drop from approx 3ft above ground level, to ground level, then up to 4ft above ground (at the dishwasher), so there's also a gravity issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks

  1. Hi Chris, there's more of an issue with the waste pipe than the supply. If you have a large downwards loop going upwards again and following the supply pipe, you could be risking a blockage with debris in the waste pipe by having such a droop.

  2. Can't see why that would make a difference, after all the water comes miles to your property.... what's another few feet ?

If you think about it, upstairs bathrooms get good pressure and they're further away from supply than you're talking about.

I've run washing machine outlets through 10' hoses and they've been fine.

Dare say a qualified plumber will now say I'm totally wrong.... but that's my thinking !

    Good luck

  3. The water pressure should not be affected any more than your pipes already hidden in the walls.

You will have a loss in pressure, (but it will not be anything you should notice) as there is always a loss in pressure the longer a pipe is.  What might affect you ,is if you use a smaller dimension pipe.  The other potential problem is in the discharge or the waste pipe.  You might be better off to move it and hook it up right to your sink when you run it the store it elsewhere the rest of the time.

A couple of other things you might consider.   They make portable full size dishwashers that you roll over to the sink and hook up to the faucet and run there then roll back to where you keep it.  They usually have a "butcher block" top.  They also make a smaller 18" wide "apartment model".  And of course there is the "drawer" type (last time I saw a price on them they were $1,500.00).

  4. Check out dishwashers that go under the work top and are designed to go inside a unit, i think they are either Bosch or Zanuzzi, check out their web sites, then you can fit one which is out of view and the plumbing can be sorted at the same time. of course the one problem with them, is you do lose storage space. Hope you find what your looking for.
