Question:

Dishwasher leaking terribly

my 10-year old dishwasher has leaked from the back into other rooms. It took forever to find the source of the leak. The plumber said the heating element needed to replaced. What else could it be? Is it cheaper to buy a new washer than pay to repair this one (over 10 years old)?

  1. If it is used often and you feel you got a lot of use from it in 10 years & it will cost near half the replacement cost to repair it then replace it.

  2. junk the old one and get you a new one

  3. Go to a couple of home improvment stores and see how much the type of new dishwasher you want costs.  If it's affordable then I would say junk the other one.  If they are expense you might consider fixing the old one.

Another thing to think about is how long you will live there for.  I wouldn't buy a expensive one if you are planning on moving.  It would however be cheaper to get a new cheap one if your moving, because an inspector would tell an incoming buyer the old one is bad.  Then you would be stuck paying to fix the old one and the price of a new one.

  4. I don't see how a bad heating element would cause a terrible water leak.  I believe he is feeding you a line, unless he fixed the leak and this is still a problem.  If he didn't find the reason for the leak, go here for some help:

  5. time for new one. now a days they are quieter and more energy efficient. check your local power company they sometimes have rebates for buying energy efficient appliances.

  6. Trash that one. lf you fix the problem with that one, being that old, something else on it will give out. Murphy's law Repairman will probably charge 1/2 of what a new one will cost anyway.
