Question:

Dishwasher problem.?

I tried running the dishwasher but it's having a problem starting. I hear that it's trying to start by making a humming noise but nothing. Yet there is water all along the bottom. Any ideas what the problem could be? And what I can do about it?

Thanks.

  1. I'm thinking a spoon/folk/knife has gone down the washer's drain.  But it might be time to buy a new washer.  They don't last long if used often.  I am on my third one in this house in 20 years.

  2. It sounds like the impeller on the motor is hung up (stuck). Shut off the breaker that feeds power to the dishwasher.  Remove the bottom access panel. You should be able to feel the motor impeller. Try moving it back and forth - is should break free. When it rotates freely, replace the cover, turn on the breaker and try it. On some models, the screen on the bottom of the inside can be removed and access to the impeller that way.

  3. time for a new dish washer

  4. I would guess there is something jammed in the pump, but filters are suppose to prevent that.

    Or the motor is bad.

  5. Sounds like the fan motor is stuck. To fix: make sure it's off, remove the bottom plate underneath the door, and stick your finger in the motor to feel the fan blade and try to force it around. If it frees up you're probably all set, if not, the motor is bad and you'll have to replace it.

  6. It would be helpful to know what brand it is. If it just hums and doesn't start, it may be the motor or pump. The start winding on the motor may be toast in which case it means a new motor or motor pump assembly which can cost $150-$300. In most cases, its better to get a new one. If the unit is less than 5 years old, there still may be a warranty for parts only on the motor/pump assembly.

  7. Sounds like the pump is blocked, check the filter inside the machine at the bottom, failing that, try and trace the outlet hose to where it enters your drain (usually under the sink) Pull it out and place it in a bucket then try again. If you haven't put salt in it for a while, chances are the whole machine is gummed up with grease. Not much to do then but call out an engineer. Also check the water inlet to make sure it is getting water coming in.
