All my cutlery seems to be going rusty when I put it in the dishwasher yet when you rub it, it just comes off so can't be rust?? Help ... only had the set since I've been married ... 2years! Is there anything can I do to prevent this from happening as at the moment might as well go back to hand-washing everything! Thanks.

  1. It is indeed light surface rust, which likely means that you have good, high-carbon knives.  Not much you can do to avoid this "problem", besides handwashing the knives, or taking them out of the dishwasher right after the final rinse.  They are rusting during the drying process.

  2. Stainless steel can get rust spots, quality and grade can all effect this, some stainless steels have carbon in them to make them hardenable.

In this case your salt reservoir may be empty or blocked.

  3. I heard you are not to put Knives, pots, or pans in dishwasher. They will rust, or you will have spots.

  4. Do you mean knives specifically?  You shouldn't put your sharp knives in the dishwasher anyway, as the abrasives dull them.

  5. it may be the metal they are made of, u should use stainless steel. it could be cos they are left wet so make sure u dry them straight away.

  6. I don't have a dishwasher but my mom does and she ends up washing stuff like that separate even big pots and pans

  7. As someone already stated, you've got a light rust coating from the dishwasher.

NEVER EVER NEVER put sharp knives into the dishwasher!  They lose their sharpness over time.  HAND wash only.

I have a stainless steel set of silverware that my grandma gave me 7 years ago when I moved into my own place.  She picked up an Oneida set at one of their outlet stores.  The box stated dishwasher safe & then also stated for best longevity, to hand wash.

Even though it's a royal pain, I hand wash ALL my silverware, including my sharp knives.  I make a small sink of hot soapy water, using antibacterial Ultra Dawn dish soap in my favorite apple blossom scent.  I add one capful of Clorox bleach to help disinfect the silverware.  I let the silverware soak until the water's cool or cold, then drain the sink & rinse the silverware off with hot water.  I air dry them on an old beach towel on the sink.

  8. I don't think there is anything you can do but hand wash them. Somethings just shouldn't go in the dishwasher, can you just hand wash the cutlery? I wouldn't put any really good pots in the DW either it can ruin them.

I have 2 sets of knives one get's rusty in the DW and the other doesn't maybe go buy only stainless steel cutlery is better? Good luck!

  9. It's caused by a chemical reaction between the different grades of metal used in your cutlery. Wash cutlery by hand.  Pots and pans are OK in the dishwasher provided you don't mix metals eg dont wash steel and aluminium pots in the same load.
