Dishwasher vs Fridge/freezer...which uses less electricity overall, like on a monthly basis?

I am moving into a house with three others and there is an option of a dishwasher or fridgefreezer. We have to pay for our own electricity so we dont want our electricity bills to be huge!! Does anyone know the approximate cost per month if the dishwasher is run once a day?

  1. Cost depends on your supplier and new appliances are more energy-efficient. In this day and age a dishwasher is not needed but a refrigerator/freezer is more of a necessity.

Running the dishwasher is tantamount to laziness. Nobody wants to load/unload it and the dishes don't get done when they should which is in the middle of the night when the drain on the power grid is the lowest.

  2. Actually we live in SoCA now, we just had SCE come out & do a free home energy evaluation on our home. You are going to be shocked at the results; the diswasher AND the freezer (given that they are energystar effecient) do not draw as much electrical wattage as the pool & fountain pump do! so run the dishwasher full (learn the proper way to load a dishwasher & yes there is a proper, effecient way to load your diswasher~ look it up online!) make sure you keep your freezer lid closed & all vents properly free of junk pressed up around to block air flow.  Enjoy your dishwasher/freezer! another thing go to the dollar store & buy small watt bulbs! unless your elderly or your a student, you do not need 40 watt bulbs through out your living space! your eyes are cameras use them! they focus & adjust to the amount of light provided. I had $300-$500 light & heating bills I went around caulked all the window sills, replaced all my bulbs in my living space with 7  (YES YOU READ THAT CORRECT ~"7"~) watt bulbs in every place except the kitchen table (which doubled as a desk space when it came time to pay bills, do homework, or read a paper) & the bathroom overhead where my husband needed the light to shave by & I needed makeup light, the rest of the house all 7 watts. The fridge got switched out to a brand new one; less than 2 years old, & an energystar, as did the stove!our bills dropped so quickly in just 1 month it was a relief to open the bill & see $112 instead of worring where we were going to find $500 for the electric alone!!not to mention our other bills! With 3 others? I'd opt for the dishwasher. your obviously going to be on different shifts & it will cut out alot of frustrating situations of "who's dishes are in the sink?" "I'm not cleaning up after them!" so go for the dishwasher. forget about the deepfreeze. You won't use it! but if you do, know that it too is cost effecient in many ways!

  3. buying a energy star appliance will overall help in reductiong of the electrical bill plus i have heard online that a dishwasher will reduce the amount of water needed which over all will save you on the water bill too
