Question:

Disillusioned with Christianity?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

Lately I feel very disillusioned with Christianity. I believe in God and up until now, I have believed that all of the major religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Muslim) are just different views of the same God but lately… I have just read and seen so many supposed ‘Christians’ sprouting the most hateful unchristian rubbish that I have every heard… its really discouraging. Does anyone know of something (anything) that may resore my faith in both Humanity and Christianity.

  1. I hear what you are saying and I'm sorry to read that you are disillusioned with Christianity.  I hear you because I know that this R&G group almost makes blood shoot out of my eyes at times.  There is so much contention, insincerity, hostility, and downright stupidity that it is frustrating.

I, too, am a Christian and it is disheartening to read from other individuals who profess to be Christians such exhibitions of un-Christlike behavior.  I just stay away from this place for awhile and come back refreshed, realizing that there are some serious-minded individuals (religious and not) who post hereon.

Keep the faith and rather than being depressed and disillusioned, quit coming to this place.

  2. Stop reading YA. Go out and meat some real people who are not succumbing to the temptation to give as good as they get.

  3. Look to the Bible and just pray to God that everyone start to actually act like Christ which is what Christians should  be doing.

  4. Emulate me as I emulate Christ.

This is what Paul says, so if you follow Paul, you will find true Christianity.

    And go Chris. :)

  5. I felt the same way too. That's why I became an atheist. Instead trying to restore faith shatter it

  6. Look through the Bible. Can you really believe that the God in there is a loving God? Read the gospel, and compare Jesus with the Bible's God. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Surely, by now it is obvious that these are two very different Gods?

If I were you, I'd go Jesus' way every time. I believe in the God who Jesus believes in, and completely reject the Bible's one. My God set Himself free after creation, and no longer had any role in Earth affairs.

  7. Well done you are well on your way to getting on with life without a load of religious nonsense messing it up for you. If you doubt what I am saying just read some of the answers you have already had.  Keep going the way you are and you will be fine.

  8. Why do you want it back in the first place..?

I lost mine, and I never really missed it. I feel much more real now! More able to think for myself, more able to enjoy this life and more able to appreciate everything for what it truly is. It's wonderful! I'm way happier and more liberated as an atheist than I ever was as a christian.

Shouldn't your goal be to figure out the truth, no matter what? Keep searching, keep following this road wherever it may take you. Restoration of blind faith should not be a goal in and on itself. Beliefs must be rooted in reality. Not in delusionary fairytales for which there is no evidence. Not in whatever it is that you *want* to be true. Good luck on your journey! You might be in for a long ride...

  9. Christianity says you need to be born again, to receive God's Spirit (evidenced by speaking in tongues) to understand God and what he is about.

The good news is that if you whole-heartedly call upon him now you can get that!

    John 3:3; Acts 2:4, 33, 39;  1 Cor. 2:9-11

  10. I don't blame you. Some people, on here and out there, are simply using the term Christianity to promote their hatred, intolerance and bigotry against their own brothers and sisters.

You can't let the loud few ruin your faith and hope.

We all undergo a daily process of conversion. That means that we're all alternating between faith and frustration (with imperfect stewards, and also with our own imperfections). I think that if you were to go to a Mass with the realization that we're all just people, and not perfected saints, that might help. Try to look for God when God is speaking (and acting) through other people and priests. But try to understand and forgive when it might not be.

What I'm talking about has to do with the gift of discernment. I think it's something we can all develop, if God so wishes. It means recognizing God's call. But also, as Christ has said, "to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves."

Often with great Good comes great Evil. If I didn't feel powerful graces at the Mass, I just wouldn't attend. But if I don't go, I begin to feel empty too.

Don't give up. Pray, ask God for the graces necessary to sustain your faith in Him.

  11. I would say your Christianity was a false one. Most are.

Anyone who would compare Christianity, Judaism, and Islam has to be confused.

Maybe you don't believe in God- maybe you just think you do, like most people.

If your are a real Christian- you will definitely not be disillusioned- that is for sure.

  12. Yes, you can start believing that Christianity is a very bad thing. A crystal meth for the nations. That way you will never see anything that would make you doubt your faith.

  13. Some time ago I was in exactly the same situation.  Despite what I had accepted and believed from a young age, I went through a time when those around me in a church were simply 'Sunday Christians'.  It was hard , but I took some time away from that particular church, not God, and focusedocus on the things which really mattered in my spiritual life.   Some time later, I came to accept that, as with all things, there are those taking the title Christian, who fill their time gossipping and being what I would call Empire Builders, not Kingdom Builders,

Stand by what you believe, in the things which until this time have been strong and true and good in your experience of God.  We are warned in the Bible that there will come a time, when there will be false prophets, saying what the masses want to hear, and not what is true.   People make mistakes, spout rubbish, and seek personal favour, but God and those who really stand firm, seek to do what is right.   When your spiritual strength improves, think about what these people say, then test it out about what you really know in your heart of hearts to be true, through your understanding of The Bible and the real Christian faith.

Today I can stand strong and true int he faith and belief of God and his will for me and my life.

Hope this has helped if only a little

May God continue to Bless & Keep you.

  14. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, while sharing the belief in one God, differ radically on who God is, particularly in that only Christianity recognizes the Jesus was God among us.

Some Christians spout rubbish because they have adopted private Bible readings as the only standard of faith, rejecting the church that Jesus established to protect his teachings.

However, some worldly people believe that Jesus' moral teachings are so much rubbish.  They don't understand that the Ten Commandments are still God's law.

  15. Hi

I know how you feel, there are so many Christians out there that give such bad points of view and are horrible, it is so embarrassing. I have really struggled with my faith recently, my Dad is a Vicar and I partly just want to break away from the Church as I see it from the inside and know how much hard work the Church is, (my Dad's church is very big 500-600+) Why not try talking to a vicar or Christian friend and get them to pray with you about this.

I also find songs from Matt Redman very helpful: You never let go, such good lyrics.

    are very good.

Try praying listen to God. You are never alone and it is fine to doubt it is only human, I went to a festival this summer and one of the talks was about doubt, there must of been 100s of people there and it really helped to put things in perspective.

    Try some of these books

    Hope this helped xxxxxx

  16. It is sign of improving mental health if you have become disillusioned with Christianity. Next step is to see the light of freedom and abandon it altogether.

  17. Ha ha...good luck to you on your quest.  BTW, if you can find something that restores your faith in both humanity and Christianity, please let me know, I'd like to have some of it too

  18. Remember that even though many people may appear to be speaking for Christ, the only guideline should be the Bible.

The Bible also has may parables and to understand them , we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is dangerous to entrust your understanding of Scripture to different groups who may sometimes end up contradicting themselves.

Watch God TV or read Joyce Meyer's books....

  19. I have been through the same phase.  I no longer consider myself affiliated with any formal religion.  I have always thought that all religions had different views of the same god and still do.

Understanding come from the recognizing that there will always be distortions, intended or not, in all religions.  Because Christianity is the most familiar in the West, we tend to think of our issues with it as a collective problem rather than specific to the source of error.

Even though I am not formally a member of the Christian Church I find a lot of it original teachings useful and practical to the confusion called our lives.  I have come to realize that the same teachings are expressed in various other religious texts and spiritual teachings as in the Bible, just with traditional and cultural variances (i.e., reaping what you sow/concept of karma).

The teachings of Dr. David R. Hawkins taught me a lot about this subject.  Check out "Power vs. Force" which has a section on religion and or "Truth vs. Falsehood" which goes more indepth.  Dr. Hawkins main themes are the teachings of mysticism from which religions arise (teachings of Christ, Buddha, Krsna, and so on).  He acknowledges the benefits as well as the limitations of religions, but also emphasizes that worship and devotion should be to God alone, not the religion.

Keep faith in God and ask Him to show you the Way.  You will see for yourself the Glory of the Lord.

    God Bless

  20. There is no god, so stop counting on that.

As for humanity... whats going on now is no different than ever before in humanity. The only thing is that our technology allows us to be aware of it.

  21. I can't help you with your faith, because I am not a christian. But I can say that I have met some very kind christians in my life Everyone has the propensity to be kind, it is just to what extent they wish to be that way.

  22. The truth is that Jesus is God.  But Islam rejects this truth, therefore Islam has a different and fake "god" that cannot save anyone.

Througout the Bible, we are told not to worship fake "gods".  So Islam is no different than those instances when the Lord said, don't worship a fake "god".  Islam has a fake "god".

If you refuse to differentiate between Jesus the one True God, compared to false "gods" that don't exist, then upon what basis do you consider yourself "Christian"?

  23. i am a christian. unfortunately many people claim to be christians but aren't very christian like. that's why we can't look at our fellow man as an example, all we can do is look to God. many people think that's impossible considering that no one can see Him. His presence is every where. no, i'm not going to tell you to look harder or pray harder or that your trust is too weak. all you have to do is look around. yes there is alot of evil, but there is so much wonder. take science for example. biology, chemistry and physics all teach what God put into place. microbiology i am currently taking in high school i have learned so many things even in the first week, that promote the existence of God. i know people that say that they are christians but act hateful or other things can be discouraging, but i have found that if i stick with people that i can learn in in faith and religion together, that we both can learn about God together. if i stick with those type of people, even if it's not 24/7, i have encouragement to have faith in God more than when i hardly see those type of people. that's why i think that church is so important.

  24. Its sad that so many Christians have forgotten what it is to be Christian. To love your fellow man and to not pass judgement. I feel the same way sometimes. But my belief in God never waivers. I know in my heart that God loves all men and that he is so forgiving and that it is not my place to judge others. No human is perfect and in the end God will be our judge. So just hang in there and don't let the acts of those who call themselves Christian but don't act that way change your mind. In the end all that matters is what is in your heart.

  26. Why do you let the acts of people make you become disillusioned with Christianity?  Are you following a faith of belief in man or a faith of belief in Christ?  All men are imperfect and they will all sin and fall short of being what they should be.  Don't look to them to be your example.  Look to Christ to lead you.  He will never let you down.  I don't care if all the leaders of my church should fail and fall into sin around me and all my fellow Christians fall into wickedness and begin to mock and laugh at me for my beliefs.  It would not impair my faith.  They are not the rock I build my faith upon, but my Savior and my Redeemer and he will never falter.

  27. I know your feeling!

  28. Julien Green says: "Religion is not understood. Those who wish themselves pious, in order to admire themselves in this state, are made stupid by religion. What is needed is to lose ourselves completely in God; what is needed is perfect silence, supernatural silence. pious talk has something revolting about it."

Religion, in the sense of something emanating from man's nature and tending to God, does not really change man or save him, but brings him into a false relationship with God: for a religion that starts in a man is nothing but man's wish for himself. Man wishes himself (magically) to become godly, holy, gentle, pure, etc. His wish terminates not in god but in himself. This is no more than the religion of those who wish themselves to be in a certain state in which they can live with themselves, approve of themselves: for they feel that, when they can approve of themselves, God is at peace with them. How many Christians seriously believe that Christianity itself consists of nothing more than this? Yet it is an-athema to true Christianity.

The whole meaning of Paul's anger with "the Law" and with "the elements of this world" is seen here. Such religion is not saved by good intentions: in the end it becomes a caricature. It must. For otherwise we would never see the difference between this and the "religion" which is born in us from God and which perhaps ought not to be called religion, born from the devastation of our trivial "self" and all our plans for "our self" even though they be plans for a holy self, a pure self, a loving, sacrificing self.

Men still share deeply and silently the anguish of Christ abandoned by His Father (to be abandoned by God is to be "in h**l") and they "despair not." How much better and saner it is to face despair and not give in than to work away at keeping up appearances and patching up our conviction that a bogus spirituality is real! That we are not facing dread! That we are all triumphantly advancing "getting somewhere" (where?), accomplishing great things for Christ, and changing the face of the world!

We can still choose between the way of Job and the way of Job's friends, and we have to have the sense (I say sense, not courage) to choose the way of Job: it takes far more than courage to start out on a way that obviously leads to the far end of nothing, and to walk over the abyss of our own absurdity in order to be found and saved by God, who has called us to walk that way. It takes sense to see that if He calls us, it is the only way. As to courage, He will provide: and of course He will provide it more in the form of hope than as plain fortitude. We must not expect to glance at ourselves and see "courage," and take comfort from this. Christ alone, on the Cross and in the darkness, but already victorious, is our comfort.

I hope this helps.  It helped me.  Maybe it is OK to be disillusioned with Christianity but that does not mean that you have to be disillusioned with Christ, our brother.

    Peace be with you

  29. Try Humanism.  Much more fulfilling.

  30. Don't listen to the people who espoused to be Christians on here and only spew hate, they have obviously not "GOT" the message of Christianity.  It makes me sad too but not disillusioned with Christianity, I refuse to let hypocrites cost me my place in heaven.  The people who are spewing hate in God's name are, in my opinion, similar to the Pharisees from the Bible who constantly belittling others.  You know what a real Christian is and you know that a lot of these people are giving the rest of us a bad name, so don't allow yourself to be drawn into that mess.

  31. True Christianity is about following in the footsteps of Christ, not other "so called christians".

Stop worrying about what other people are doing, and focus on God.

Keep your eyes on God and you can't fail at anything.
