Would disinfectant be a desirable sustitute for handwashing clothes?

  1. No. Detergents break up and lift the dirts and oils away, they use surfactants to stop them reattaching.

    A disinfectant would only kill the germs, but would not move the dirt, which is normally the point of washing, unless you get germs on your clothes, in which case washing in a warm/hot wash with detergent kills most of them too.

    You might also find that you don't like the smell that the disinfectant will leave on your clothes. Remember, you may be used to smelling it on hard surfaces where not much can penetrate, but in soft fabrics it will linger. Your skin might not like to be next to disinfectant all the time to, remember you have some good bacteria on your skin that you would not want to upset.

  3. If you mean can disinfectant substitute washing powder - it depends on how dirty the clothes are.

    I sometimes use the disinfectant (at the same time as washing powder) cos I like the really fresh smell it leaves behind.
