The fast passes are free.  You basically go to the ride and insert your Disney Ticket and select a time slot (ie 1-2pm, 2-3pm) you want to return for the ride.  You simply then return during that hour and have your ride.  Most of the time we just got straight on but we did have to queue the odd time, no  longer than 10mins though.  Also you can only have one fast pass on the go at anyone time, that's why they use your disney ticket.  We would go to a ride, select our fast pass for the next hour slot and then do something else, see something less popular, get a drink or lunch in the same area.

As everyone else has already mentioned, they are free.  Just make sure you keep your ticket that you used to get into the park as that is what you use to get your fast passes.

BIG TIP:  When you get a fast pass for a ride, say Space Mountain, it will list a time range for you to ride that ride.  Such as between 12:30pm and 1:30pm.  DO NOT be at Space Mountain at 12:30pm, because everyone else that got fast passes will be there as well, and you might even have to wait a little in the fast pass lane.  Instead at 12:30 you can now get your next fast pass ticket.  So at 12:30 be at the next fast past ride that you want to go on, say Peter Pan.  At 12:30pm, you can now get a fast pass for Peter Pan, and then go use your first fast pass at Space Mountain.  Less line waiting and more fast pass uses.

*not all rides use fast passes but usually the ones with the longest wait do.

*they are only good for that day and at that time (although if is not too busy and your pass is for that day, they will let you use it)

*the FP ticket will tell you when you can get another fast pass.

*there is a limited number of fast passes per day. once they are gone, they are gone.

best thing to do is combine fast passes with regular lines and if you can, with single rider lines. you can see everything or close to it in one day.

You are still going to wait in line with a fast pass. But it will be a shorter wait.

Be sure to check wait time the fast pass are going for BEFORE you get one. On some of the rides it can be (as a example)11am and the fast pass being handed out won't be till 6pm. You may be at dinner or gone from the park by then. A digital sign will be posted with the info.

As stated above. You can not go around collecting fast passes. Once you have one you can't get another till 1) you use the fast pass or 2) two hours have past. Check with a cast member on the rules.

My daughter and her friend got in the single line for Test Track. They were able to ride it much faster than even the fast pass line. A couple of times they even got to ride together.
