Would an 11 year-old boy who is scared of rollercoasters, yet able to handle WDW's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, be able to handle WDW's Space Mountain? And, if so, which side is less intense?

  1. i don't think you'll be scared of Space mountain its a fun ride and I don't think either of the roller coasters are intense

  2. First, if you have never been on a roller coaster, even a small coaster can be scary. so understand that. its as much a fear of the unknown as it is of the roller coaster.  also see if any other fears might affect how he sees each ride.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was my first coaster. and i though it was fun. even though i am afraid of heights. but because this coasters is build like a mountain, i never felt like i was too high up. there was always ground bellow me. so i think this is a good option for a first coaster.

Space Mountain is a coaster that takes place in the dark. not bad if you have good night vision. however, if you are afraid of the dark, it might not be the best option.  also, the front of the coaster is a much and i mean MUCH smoother ride. so if you go, get on the first car. you can request it. you might have to wait. and if its too busy, they may not allow it but you can ask.

i would say, Thunder, then splash and Space for last.

there is a kid coaster in Toon Town but its a regular track coaster that could intimidate someone afraid of heights.

  3. I had a fear of roller coasters when I went to Disney World (and I still do). I went on Space Mountain first, and I found it easier for me than Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, because on Space Mountain, it's dark and it's indoors, and for some reason I can handle those types of rides more than outdoors, wooden roller coasters. Some people might disagree, but that's just me. I think they're both about the same intensity level for me. You would probably be able to handle it if you were able to go on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

  4. i say  space is  due to its all in the dark but its not super bad   with thunder mt  its not smooth due to its a wooden coaster so its all really your prefrence they are not bad coasters at all

  5. all rides are mild, no thrills, no fun, and no puke.

  6. It has been a bit since I have been to Disney, so I do not remember the difference between the sides, but one important thing is that space mountain is an indoor coaster. It is dark, and hard to see. however, as someone who was scared of coasters when I was younger, I loved indoor coasters. There are no huge drops, only little ones, and space mountain is relatively tame compared to other indoor coasters. If it is the drops he doesn't like, Space Mountain may be fine. If it is the speed and the jerkiness...definitely not.

  7. My daughter was 9 when we last visited WDW and she loved Space Mountain.  She did not go on any other roller coasters during our stay because of her intense fear of them, but I think the inability to see the drops and turns on Space Mountain made it easier on her.  I'm not sure which side is less intense but it's not any more intense than Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, just darker.  Hope you try it.  It was the first ride I ever went on at WDW when I first visited at age 11.

  8. Disney's Roller Coasters are not scary at all! & Space Mountain is the same on both sides. It's not intense at all, the whole ride is just turns and stuff. It's actually quite boring and babyish in my opinion.

  9. yes both sides are same......i think he sgould go on it.  its not too intense...

  10. yeah....I have a big fear of roller coasters but space mountain was awesome. The only fear i had the second time was because I rode the first time without the lights and Im a lot taller than the average height....the bars were awful low so when I rode the second time with the lights off i was afraid my head was gonna chop off.  But seriously space mountain only goes up to about 37 mph from what I remember through learning about it.  It feels like you are going about 60 but I rode a 60...75 dont remember mph one (the aerosmith) and that felt about 90.  Anyways....he might be scared but just tell him to do what i do... go with it relax your body and have the time of your life!
