Disney character Pete chewing?

I have been wondering what the disney character, Pete, the villain in one of the mickey mouse classic cartoons, chews and spits out some black thing. The thing he chews looks like a bar of chocolate but i don't think it is, or is it?, and it usually has a star logo on it. what is he chewing? Can u tell me what it is?

Most likely Pete was chewing on tobacco. (Star-brand chewing Tobacco)

Most of the Mickey Mouse classic cartoons were made in the 40-50s, back in the days when it was "not considered inappropriate" to show bad or tough-personified cartoon characters smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol as well as having "U.S. Marine" tattoos on their body.
