I have a 10 yr old gelding and he is absolutely gorgeous, though he has thrown me off twice bitten someone (not a dentist or anything) and raised his leg to kick me. He also wont let you put a bridle on him (he lifts his head high and clamps his mouth shut). I have lost alot of confidence through him ( i didnt ride another horse for atleast 3 months, and i havent riden him for like 2years). I need some tips and activities which can raise my confidence and train him to be more ridable. By the way i was 11 at the time.

  1. Try with a Horse psychologist.

  2. He sounds pretty unruly and belligerent, and is clearly the one in charge, in your "relationship."  He's been spoiled and is just doing what comes naturally.  Not really his fault.  Find someone who is experienced to come out and work with him, and let you watch how they handle him.  It would take far too long to describe what you need to do in this forum, and it is something best demonstrated in person to you by a knowledgeable horse person.

  3. Share your concerns with more experienced rider and or trainer.  Find yourself a more finished mount.

If time permits, locate a working farm where young colts and fillies are handled and schooled.  Offer to work for the experience of learning different techniques and temperments.

  4. Hes horsin around !!

Seriously though he is being unruly, and something has happened at one point or another for him to know that he can get away with this behavior

He has scared you and you have backed off - so now he knows by doing the same behavior he can get away with it because it scares you and you back off - he can sence your fear and nervousness, and thus he reacts is unruly ways.

A horse is like a child, you have to be firm and consistant and the minute you back down they know they can get away with it and they will do it over and over again until you go back and burst there bubble.

My suggestion to you is to get together with an expierienced rider and or trainer and have them work with you with the horse, but the biggest thing of all is your going to have to step up to the plate,be confident and let him know your not afraid and not going to tollerate the behavior..

carry a crop or a stick with you - if he tried to bite - tap him right away with the crop and let him know he is bad by telling him NO _ BAD.

Use the crop for the hind leg going up as well - when that leg goes up,tap him with the crop and tell him to nock it off - NO _ BAD

you have to be firm and be consitant

I have broken horses before of these habbits but you need someone  expierienced and  close to you that can work with you a couple days a week

  5. When you have a unConfident rider you will have a disobedient horse

    Get some lessons.

And now that your older maybe things have or will change, But you really need a pro help,

  6. Mr Ed, who's real name was "Bamboo Harvester" had similar problems.  They used to get him to make it look like he was talking by applying a tazor to his cornhole.
