Disposing a mercury thermostat

Question

I was wondering if anyone knows how I can correctly dispose of an old mercury thermostat or any mercury recycle programs around me (Canton, GA), I don't want to throw it in the garbage (I am assuming it would be bad for the environment) Thank you!

break it and play with the beads of mercury that roll around, its fun

put sand on it, then put it in a separate trash bag and throw it out.

take it to your doctors office they will dispose of it for you

Two of the answers you got so far were very irresponsible.  Contact your county to find out where and when they accept hazardous waste.  In no circumstances should the thermostat be placed in your regular trash.
