Disposing of lighters?

Is there a proper (safe) way to dispose of lighters (cigarette lighters)? Can I just pop them into the trash?

What ever  you do make sure that they dont end up in streams & rivers which eventually join the sea.  I watched this programme which showed a particular type of bird whose whole stomach contents contrained trash, the majority of the trash lighters etc.  I was absolutely disguisted by it, the birds seen the debri floating on the oceans surface and mistaked it for food and obviously over time died as a result of its mistake.

It's good to see that you are being sensible and wanting to power yourself with information.

The safest way is to release all the pressure in the lighter first before throwing them into the trash.  After it quits, just hold the button down till you can no longer hear the gas escaping. Most of the time, it will run out of pressure anyways, but there are times when the flint wears out first, that's when you want to release the remaing pressure.
