Question:

Dispute Charges on Credit Card - Does it work?

I just called Chase and they act like its simple, the charges are already in dispute, I have to fill out some paper work wihtin 10days.

What happened is I charged 5 appliances for a new house. 2 of which I cancelled over the phone and they said to bring card in and they would swipe it to issue the credit. So today we wentto pick up the other and now they refuse to credit us. They want to think about it. So now I don't think they deserve any sale at all. Chase says if we don't take ownership we don't have to pay it. The store would have to prove we took ownership. I don't want stress but it seems like there would be more complications than this. My husband is there now, nice as can be telling them we aren't taking anything now. I just want to ask you if it really is this simple and this guy can't get away with this can he?

  1. Instead of calling, you should have just sent a letter explaining the reason for the dispute.  Sometimes credit card companies say they will send you forms and maybe you don't get them.  If you don't get those forms in 10 days, just send a letter.

The merchant may change there tune and offer to do the credit, but I'd still put thru the dispute with your card.  If the store puts thru a credit, that takes will settle the dispute.

  2. I don't see where it's going to get complicated.  If you don't take possession, they don't get paid.

  3. In this (sad) era of identity theft, disputing charges is pretty straightforward, actually.  Chase will be good to their word: if you don't have the appliances, the charges have already been run, and the store refuses to refund your money, then dispute the charges.  The credit will show up on next months statement.

BTW - if the turkey at the appliance store is really a jerk about it, tell your husband to bite his tongue and file a strongly worded complaint to the Better Business Bureau.

  4. If they are still charging you for all the appliances and didn't deliver you should win the dispute easily. Just keep records of who you talk to and when. And get all the paperwork in on time. I've had to do it a couple of time and I always won.
