Dissecting a Mushroom - Worms?

This is out of pure curiosity.....

My wife and I noticed large White mushrooms that quickly sprouted on our front lawn (these mushrooms grew very large in about two days). Anyway, we carefully removed the mushrooms from the soil and opened up the stalks for a closer look. We found hundreds of tiny White-colored (maggot-looking) worms inside the stalks, near the base of the mushroom. We were merely curious what they may be? thanks in advance!
