At 10:00 A.M. two cars leave the same location and travel in opposite directions. One car's speed is 50 mi/h, while the other's speed is 55 mi/h. At what time are the cars 273 mi apart?

  1. it pretty simple. lets break it down in to pieces.

    when both cars travel one hour they will be 105 miles apart (just add the mileage up together).

    in two hours they will be 210 miles apart.

    now do 273 - 210 = 63 (miles left) / 2 = 30.15 (each car has to go)

    car 1: you do 60 (minutes) / 50 (mi/h) = 1.2 mi/min X 30.15 (miles left) = 36.18 minutes

    car 2: you do 60 (minutes) / 55 (mi/h) = 1.09 mi/min X 30.15 (miles left) = 32.86 minutes

    add 36.18 + 32.86+ 120 (two hours) = about 3 hrs and 8 mins (thats the answer im pretty sure)

    105x=273

    x=2.6 hours
