I could use any help to solve the following problem:

A plane flies from base camp to Lake A, 350 km away in the direction 20.0° north of east. After dropping off supplies it flies to Lake B, which is 170 km at 30.0° west of north from Lake A. Determine the distance and direction from Lake B to the base camp.

  1. Aiden is right on.

    Because your first two directions, if drawn right, will give you a 90 degree angle, you've got yourself a right triangle, and you need to find its hypotenuse.  Pythagoras can help you do that in a flash.

    For the direction in degrees, you can either accurately draw out the triangle once you know the actual side lengths, or you can use trigonometry to figure out the angle between B and base camp and reconcile that with a north-facing compass.
