  1. 26 miles (41 km) (22 nautical miles)

  2. The dislike between Cologners and Duesseldorfers is not nearly as strong as that person portrays it!!!  I lived in Duesseldorf for the longest time and have visited/ partied in Cologne many times, and nobody threw stones at me...  The thing about the beer is true though - but you can find spicy-mustard bockwurst in Cologne too. :-)

The ICE ride is awesome -expensive but awesome.  You don't even hear the train moving, it is so high tech and fast!

  3. The distance is approximately 40km. But the cultural distance is immense! One city drinks Alt beer and the other drinks Koelsch beer. One city drinks Killepitsch schnaps and the other eats spicy mustard with their Bockwurst. But you are not allowed to order one of those items in the wrong city, since Cologners and Dusseldorfers hate each other. Everyone has different reasons why, but I've read that the bishop of Cologne sent his army centuries ago to destroy the city walls of Dusseldorf, and since then they resent each other. Where the Dusseldorf city walls once stood is now the "Koenigsallee" or the "Koe" for short, which is Germany's version of Rodeo Drive.

Anyway, it takes roughly half an hour on the affordable regional train from one main train station to the other. The regional trains are called "Regional Bahn." However, there are express trains which only make two stops along the way (in Leverkusen and Benrath), they take only 18 minutes. They are called "Regional Express" and cost about the same. The inter-state ICE and IC trains take less than ten minutes and make no stops along the way, but it may not be worth the premium price.

Hope that helps (I used to live in Dusseldorf)!
