  1. The trains are separating at a relative speed of 85+95 = 180 km/hr

    Distance = Rate * Time

    Plug in the numbers

    315 km = 180km/hr * X hr

    315 km / 180km/hr = Xhr

    7/4 hr = X hr

    The trains are 315 km apart 1 hour and 45 minutes after they began.

  2. Distance = Rate * Time

    In your case you have two trains, so

    Distance = Train1 rate *time + Train2 rate * time

    315 = 85t + 95t

    315 = 180t

    t = 1.75 or 1 3/4 hrs
