  1. Race is a fictional construct based on skin color. Because of wonders of DNA and heredity some other physical traits are commonly associated with race.

Ethnicity is a cultural classification that includes language, religion, and all sorts of other cultural elements.  Because people tend to live together in families and groups ethnicities tend to be of the same race, but not necessarily so.

  2. Race is the body type your ancestors originally started from. It pertains to the physiological features of the person, like certain nose types, or skin colour. Ethnicity is race plus culture. Like an African American, or an Irish Italian. Its more of who you identify with.

  3. The actual definition of race used in anthropology is... a breeding gruop. We think of races as white, black, etc. But of course people of these different groups can breed with one another, can have children, so by this definition, all people are one race: the human race. That's not being sanctimonious. it really is the official definition of race per anthropology and biology.

Ethnicity has more to do with culture. Generally, ethnicity is based on nationality and sometimes religion. So to say someone is Chinese or of Italian descent - that's their ethic group. Jewish people from Eastern Europe will say that "Jewish" is their ethnic group, rather than Russian or Polish. In African countries, ethnic group may be more by tribe (Zulu, for example) than by country.
