I'm looking for a distortion pedal that dosn't just give me that grudgy, crunchy sound i'm looking for one that will, when on clean, contort and distort my sound, like the solo from cherub rock by the smashing pumpkins and the solo from cult of personality by living colour. some good loop pedals wouldn't hurt either.

  1. Fulltone OCD is a great distortion pedal.  Also the Zvex Box of Rock is a killer sounding dimed vintage Marshall.  Their Vexter series sound just as good as the original painted boxes and are cheaper.

Boss RC-2, RC-20 & RC-50 are all very good loop pedals.

  2. So what you're saying is that you want a pedal that will give you crunchy rhythm distortion at one end of the spectrum, and a cleaner but still overdriven sound at the other?

Well, one of the things that Billy did was turn all the volume and gain controls on his high gain tube amp all the way up, and use the volume on his guitar to control both volume and level of gain. You might want to try that... if your amp's dirty channel cleans up well, that could be the sound you want.

You should always try getting the sound you want from the amp first, before adding pedals in. This of course assumes that you have a decent amp. Some pedals can do this too... nothing digital/modeling, but some analogy pedals will clean up nicely. The best way to discover these is through playing them and messing with your guitar's volume.

  3. try running it through an evelope filter or an auto-wah

  4. BOSS, DS-1, DS-2 ARE REALLY GOOD!
