Distributer Cap Used or new?

I have a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5 The car wont start.

I opened the cover on my distributer cap and one of the spark plug wires were loose. When i tried to plug it back in, i noticed that the thing you put the plug over had broke off. So i priced a new cap and it is around $50. My question is, should i buy a new one or is it possible to use a used one?

  1. why buy some one elses problem. new of course.

  2. Buy everything. Disributor cap, spark plugs, and wires. AND DO NOT forget the firing order when you change it out.

  3. New and forget it than used and being bother with all the times.

  4. Buy a new one. Buy new wires as well. Probably worn out by now.

  5. Buying a used distributor cap is a false economy, it won't last very long.  The contacts inside will be worn (and worn in an incompatible way to your rotor arm), and the spring inside the centre contact will have lost its springiness.

If the cap is on its way out then I would recommend changing the rotor arm and the HT leads at the same time.

  6. you get what you pay for when it comes to automobiles, go with the new, dont deprive your benz!

  7. A new one will be best.  a used one may have hidden cracks and cause trouble too.
