Diversity in Ireland?

My friend and I are planning a trip to Ireland this summer. We were wondering how tolerant are they of different ethnic groups. Examples: Black people, asian people, and hispanic people.

  1. Very tolerant of friendly people from wherever. Older Irish people who didn't see or mix with other ethnic groups until fairly reasonably might be a bit patronising, but generally if you're friendly to the locals, they'll be friendly to you.

  2. I don't know if we're quite the melting pot yet, but people are pretty welcoming in general, especially to tourists. Having said that, the NCCRI, the body responsible for gathering information on racist incidents, published the following in its most recent report:

-In the whole of 2007 there were 99 cases reported compared with 65 in 2006.

-Half of the incidents reported occurred in Dublin

-The breakdown shows that the most significant victims of racist incidents were black Africans males. However people of Asian origin as well as members of the Traveller community also experienced racism.

-The main complaints from people from central and Eastern European relate to the work place.

-15% of the 99 incidents reported refer to racially abusive content posted on Irish internet forums.

We do not have a significant Latin American population (outside of the Brazilians in and around Gort, Co. Galway) and the only Colombian girl I know says everyone assumes she is Spanish and she has never had any problems.

Now, without making any excuses at all for the above figures, there are over 400,000 immigrants living in Ireland, and over 7 million tourists from all over the world come every year to Ireland, so 99 cases is relatively quite low (personally, I feel even one case would not be low enough). There is a very low risk of you experiencing any problems at all on your trip. We rely heavily on tourism and the vast majority of people are open to other cultures and welcoming of different ethnic groups.

Come, expect to enjoy your trip, and you probably will.

  3. Ireland is a very welcoming country. We have a lot of different races and ethnicities living and working here already.

Just dont get involved in any politics (I doubt you are going to) but Irish politics is Irish politics and it should stay that way.

    Enjoy your trip

  4. Sher don't we love the ethnic people?

There's plenty of Chinese restaurants around the place. There's even a few Indian ones as well.

And sher didn't Dr Banji represent the people of Clare?

And as for black people:  Oooo Ahhhhhh Paul McGrath!

And how can we forget Phil Lynott?

Sher we're a great melting pot altogether!

  5. We don't have great diversity yet but it's becoming more diverse every year. Most of us are pretty tolerant but there can always be one jackass.
