  1. Learn to equalize the pressure, either by swallowing your saliva or clench your nose and blow with closed mouth. Avoid going deeper than 15 feet. Those pearl-divers can dive without equipment down to great depths for 5 mins and more--that's because they have been doing it since young. Be safe and enjoy your swimming, dont go for records, as it is not worth it. A couple of persons, including one female, had died while attempting to break records. Best wishes!

  2. Don't use ear plugs.

All that does is keep the inner ear dry, which isn't the issue here. The problem has to do with a pressure imbalance between the ambient pressure ( the surrounding water pressure exerted on you) and the pressure of the air in the air spaces in your ears, nose and sinus cavities. The most common way to equalize the pressure is to pinch your nose and blow gently with mouth closed, as you descend and BEFORE you feel any discomfort. The pain you're feeling now is due to the eustachion tubes linking your ears to the other air spaces, collapsing because of the pressure imbalance.

If you use ear plugs, you won't be able to equalize properly and they can contribute to an inner ear injury.

  3. its called swimmers ear.

only some have it. you get the pain when you do a dive or a hand stand in the pool. so if you dive with ear plugs they may fall out because all the presure you put on them when you go under the water.
