Division 1-Wisden Cup: Kevin Dennerly, Tom Armstrong prove their worth in Men’s Doubles event
The twosome of Kevin Dennerly Minturn and Tom Armstrong put a laudable effort and enthralled Asher Richardson-Tjitte Weistra in Division 1-Wisden Cup on August 11, 2012.
This three-set tussle was the second Men’s Doubles tie of a match between Auckland and Waikato which was played at Hamilton, New Zealand.
Both teams earned great deal of admiration for their honest efforts while piling up final result of 16-21, 21-13 and 21-17.
Kevin and Tom were a bit confused in the beginning which cost them an opening match point but then they switched on their best and served notice of their supremacy in the last two games.
Meanwhile, the opposing team could not repeat their performance of the first set and surrendered tamely in crucial moments of the battle.
The partnership of Asher and Tjitte looked at its best in the opening game as they completely dominated in all areas of the court.
They set the ball rolling straight away in the beginning and kept moving forward at top gear throughout the set.
They did not allow their rivals to catch them and cruised to victory by registering a convincing margin of 21-16.
However, next game completely changed the scenario as the suppressed duo of the first set showed transformed character and levelled the match score.
This time Kevin and Tom played with positive approach and made amends with their unbeatable strategy.
They gained an early advantage by prevailing in couple of uninterrupted rallies and maintained the upper hand all the way to mid-game break.
Later part of the game saw them widening the gap and strengthening their grip with a few valuable points in a row.
The Auckland campaigners finished second set with an eight-point lead in 21-13 score and setup a nerve-racking decider.
Third set became consequential with this revised status and both contenders put all they got to oust the opposing team.
They remained toe-to-toe in first half of the set but then Kevin and Tom made difference with some successive points.
They maintained this tempo in final stage of the game and raised hands as victors by registering favourable figure of 21-17.
