Division 2-Slazenger Cup: Simon Koo stuns Alfred Wong in Men’s Singles challenge
Men’s Singles campaigner Simon Koo showed elevated craft and enthralled Alfred Wong in Division 2-Slazenger Cup at Hamilton, New Zealand on Friday, August 10, 2012.
This hard fought tussle was the third Men’s Singles tie of a match between Canterbury and Big Brand Leisure.
Both contenders remained locked in a tough competition for three gruelling sets before reading the final figures of 21-13, 16-21 and 9-21.
Though, Alfred Wong took off in perfect manner but he could not enjoy a smooth flight and crashed in the last two games.
Meanwhile, Simon Koo played with great conviction and locked the honour by concluding the last two sets in a favourable manner.
The first set started with Alfred making a swift progress and leaving his challenger far behind on points table. He kept on gathering valuable points without any interruption and registered an indomitable total of 11 before the interval.
After the mid-game break, Simon showed some spark and mounted pressure by ruling in few consecutive rallies but this short campaign was not enough to stop Alfred from bagging first set with a notable difference in 21-13 margin.
However, this proved last success of Canterbury campaigner as he could not repeat this performance ever again and surrendered in disgraceful manner in the next games.
On the other hand, Simon showed transformed character and started cruising to victory by winning second set of the match.
This time he did not wait for the right moment and unleashed a flurry of power packed strokes which ultimately helped him to corner the opposing shuttler in the first half.
He did not lose this rhythm even after the one-minute interval and doubled his lead to level the match score with a staggering knock of 21-16.
The local crowd was expecting a competitive tussle in the decider but their thirst was not filled as Simon Koo stole the limelight with a dazzling performance.
Alfred Wong was no competition to him and he hardly faced any trouble to place an overwhelming figure of 21-9.
Later, his team-mates followed the successful trail and took Big Brand Leisure to a dominating position in the pool by sealing a 9-7 victory.
