Looking at the NL West division, I'm wondering if any team has ever won a division title with a losing record.

  1. No but a few yrs ago the St. Louis cardinals w/ an 83-78 record won the NL Central and then knocked off San Diego and new York on their way to taking down Detroit in the World Series

  2. it will happen this yr if it nver happened b4 dodgers with 80-82 record u heard it here 1st

  3. It hasn't happened yet, but the CardAnals a couple years ago had the worst record of any playoff team ever.

  4. I'll top Jacoby: The Padres won the NL West in 2005 (I believe) with an 82-80 record. I think that's the worst record ever for a division winner. That same division could break the record this year.

  5. It could happen this year. If the Dodgers and the Diamond Backs would still fight it out. The Diamond Backs should be in the playoffs but for their bad offense

  6. The worst record by a division winner, so far, has been the 2005 Padres, who finished 82-80 (.506) to win the NL West.

There were no declared division champions in 1994 (and no postseason), but in that first season of the three-division format, the Rangers were leading the AL West when the season ended early with a 52-62 (.456) record.

The 1981 Royals went to the playoffs thanks to a 30-23 (.566) record to win the AL West in the second half. Their overall record was 50-53 (.485), the only losing team in major league history to reach the postseason. (This gets overlooked often, as full-season records were irrelevant in 1981.)
