Question:

Divorce information from the 1930s?

My paternal grandmother's name (as I knew it was Barbara J Vitiello) and I never knew my grandfather. In doing some searching, I found that she had been married to a man, whose last name was Olson on May 10, 1934.

I can't seem to find any record of her ever having gotten divorced from Mr. Olson and any sort of a marriage certificate where she remarried. Is it possible that her divorce was never recognized?

My grandmother's parents last names were Sohlnika and Katanic and it seems that my father and his older brother were a product from that marriage,

Can someone tell me how or where I might be able to track down my grandmother's divorce and marriage certificate (where her last name became Vitiello) for free and online through a website?

My father and his older brother, as well as my grandmother are all deceased and I do know of my father's half-brother (which I will not contact under any circumstances because I want nothing to do with him).

Any help or advice with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

  1. Ancestry.com had a free offer to search for your relatives.  The promotion may be over but you could see if they even offer what you seek. /

  2. Nothing that you need will be on the internet, nor will it be free. A divorce is a civil lawsuit and held only by the court that heard the case. If the marriage were annulled, it would just be a matter of finding the marriage license and it would tell you which court heard the annulment case. But a divorce will only be registered by the court where they lived when they filed it. If you know where your dad and his brother grew up, then you can contact the court there and ask if there is a divorce on file. They may or may not give you the information over the phone.

I can find some records of a family with the same last name in Allegheny Co PA, but she's not listed amongst them in any of the censuses. I guess my first question to you is when was your father born and do you have a copy of his birth certificate? Work from what's known and move outwards.
