hi there, i am about to paint walls in dining (tere's an open kitchen here), problem is some of the wall is plasterboard, some of it painted already wallpaper and rest is just wall. basically what i want to know is if there is any sort of apropriate paint i should use so i can paint on all of them, i just want to have it all white. I have seen many different paints with different prices, one that drew my attention (cheapest one lol) was White Vinyl Matt, is that one any good?? thanks

  1. Yes that will be fine, the paper might bubble a little when wet but should be alright when dry

  2. Vinyl matt is a standard emulsion.  Should be ok providing there are no metallic flecks in any design on the wallpaper.

Cheap vinyl matt emulsion is often a false economy.  Just buy Dulux.

  3. With painting preparation is more important than the paint itself. If the walls are clean, no gease or dirt and if you can roughen it up with some sandpaper (fine grit) you should be fine to paint all the surfaces.

  4. Any good quality latex paint should do.  I'd go for a mid price rather than the cheapest.  If you are painting in the kitchen (?I don't think so) you should use a gloss finish so it's washable.

I wonder if White Vinyl Matt is a color, rather than a brand?

I am so miserable if I have to live in a house with white walls; color inspires me.

  5. With walls interior which may be difficult to cover,(usually damp) a trick of the trade is to use masonary paint its thicker for coverage, avalible in white, pound for pound not too expensive (u get a big tin).

  6. Yes that is what I would use. That is an emulsion (so water based paint) matt so not shiney so great for painting anything not 100% perfect. If you used Silk (in emulsion) or a gloss paint (when using oil based paint) any imperfections will shout out at you because the light is reflected by the shiney finish. Always buy "vinyl" emulsion as this makes the paint more durable. Buying the DIY stores own brand (especially if it declares 'one coat' ) is a good way to make a saving but avoid budget paint as they are usually thinner and you need several coats to get a satisfactory finish. I made the mistake of buying a budget ceiling paint once then used it on a wall. It wasn't durable and everytime you brushed past it you were covered in a white powder marks!

If your plasterboard is not already painted you will benefit by painting it and the wall with a watered down (add 20% water) emulsion first and allow to dry overnight. It will look awful but it will seal the absorbency of the wall so subsequent coats will not be sucked in by the plaster.

Always allow the paint to dry completely between coats as the different wall finishes will dry at different rates and what looks patchy before going to bed will look beautiful the next morning.

If the walls are very rough then the suggestion of masonry paint is good - I have used this to paint the internal stairwell of a tenement of flats with great results.

You mention the kitchen area, you could use a kitchen & bathroom paint which is moisture resistent and pretty much can be used to paint anything. You can wash it down easily when needed but at a price - £15 for 2.5l. Just painted the bathroom yesterday with this and practically finished the tin and it is not a very big bathroom!

  7. I advise you take the wallpaper down first. No matter what paint you go with the end of the wallpaper will stick out.

Even though at the time it seems better, cheap paint is never good. In a few years it will start to chip and crack and just look worse and worse. Try Benjamin Moore paint or even Behr paint (home depot). They are the best paints and will look great for many years. Invest in these now and it will save you from spending more on paint in the future.

    Good luck!

  8. yes matt paint is good for all walls papered or not

  9. yes it should be fine. you may find you need to do more coats in some areas than others as plasterboard will be more absorbant than wallpaper. dont listen to people who say you need to buy the most expensive paint white is white ive painted half my house with budget white and its fine. i think vnyl matt has a slightly shinier finish than just plain matt emulsion

  10. I've never heard of that paint you mention.  If it was me I'd buy a good brand of paint - usually not the least expensive, and before painting the finish coat, I'd give everything a good base coat of white primer.

  11. You need to put plain lining paper on the plaster wall otherwise it will look odd with painting over the other wall... or remove all paper, cheap white paint then decent paint...
