Question:

Dizzy when waking up?

So, I wake up, get out of bed, and start moving. When I walk, about five seconds later I get dizzy, and I can't see well. It's almost like I only see salt and pepper.

This only happens sometimes though. Anything wrong with my vision, or am I just moving too fast?

  1. This sounds like postural hypotension.  Here is a quick anatomy and physiology lesson.

The carotid arteries in your neck have sensors called barroreceptors.  These sensors sense the amount of pressure in the arteries leading to the brain and send signals to the brain to adjust the output of the heart so as to keep the blood pressure going to the brain constant.  When you have been laying down for some time the barroreceptors sense that not much heart output is necessary to keep the blood pressure normal to the brain.  BUT, when you stand up suddenly, gravity causes the blood to drain down out of your brain.  The barroreceptors sense this but there is a short lag between the when the blood actually starts draining downward, to when the barroreceptors sense it, to when they send a signal to the brain to inicrease heart output, to when the brain actually sends the signal to the heart, to when the heart actually responds to the signal to increase output.   During this short time lag, the blood in the brain can decrease to the point that you will feel light headed, dizzy, and actually can get blurred vision.  As soon as the heart responds, though, the blood returns to the brain as it should be and PRESTO you return to normal.  Next time you get out of bed, sit up first for just a moment before you actually stand up.  This will give your body time to adjust.

  2. Sounds like you are getting out of bed to quickly.. Your equilibrium could be off. I would advise that you speak with your Dr.

  3. It could be many things from blood sugar problems to equalibrium and inner ear trouble, to blood pressure issues. You will not get a reliable answer in here becuase even the doctors in here would realy need to see you to be able to diagnose you properly. The only real way to get this resolved is to call your doctor and be seen.
