Djokovic, Nadal, Federer looking forward for London – Preview: 2011 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals
The top eight ranked players in the world collide each year in the ATP World Tour Finals. This year, the 2011 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals will take place in the O2 Arena in London from November 20, 2011 to November 27, 2011.
As of October 13, 2011, five players qualified for the prestigious tennis tournament. Novak Djokovic (Serbia) was the first to qualify on May 15, 2011 followed by Rafael Nadal (Spain) on June 8, 2011. Andy Murray (Great Britain) was the third to enter the
competition on September 2, 2011 who was followed by the 16-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer (Switzerland) on September 3, 2011. The fifth player to enter the tournament was David Ferrer (Spain) on October 13, 2011. These five players now wait to see when
they would join the remaining three players to complete the list of eight players.
In 1970, the ATP World Tour Finals made their debut in Tokyo. Stan Smith (USA) won the title in 1970 by defeating Rod Laver (Australia). Ivan Lendl (Czechoslovakia) won five titles (1981, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987). His record of
five wins was equalled by Pete Sampras (1991, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999). Later, it was Roger Federer (Switzerland) who became the third player to win five ATP World Tour titles (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010).
In the 2011 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, Federer would be defending his title against seven other top ranked players. Among those who have already qualified for this year’s tournament, Novak Djokovic won the title in 2008 and
Roger Federer has won it five times. Rafael Nadal was the runner-up at the 2010 event and Ferrer was the runner-up in 2007. Andy Murray has never entered into the finals and would try to enter the finals for the first time.
For Federer, it will not matter who the last three players will be to join in the 2011 tournament, for he is the most experienced one among the eight. Federer will definitely have an edge over others and would dominate the tournament
for he would be looking to defend his title successfully at the season-ending tournament in London.
All the eight players to participate in the 2011 ATP World Tour Finals would eye at the title win for the winner is awarded with 1500 ranking points, boosting their current standing and increase their moral as they step into a
new season.
Nadal would fight to win the title, as he was the runner-up in the 2010 edition against Federer. Djokovic, on the other hand, would also try hard to win the tournament having previously won it once before. World number 5, Spaniard
Ferrer, who is performing well in 2011 with a 51-15 win-loss ration and 2 career titles, will also want to march past the other contenders and win the title for the first time.
