  1. If Roger Federer wins today--particularly in three sets--it would be a testament to his legendary fortitude and will to win that he has shown time and time again over the past five years. If Federer might run out of gas if he does not win in two sets.

Common sense suggests that Federer should not win today. The fresh and young Djokovic is lucky to be facing an exhausted Federer whose overall fitness has been setback by his mononucleosis viral illness this year. This fitness factor coming into today’s match gives Djokovic the edge if the match goes into three sets. If Federer is also carrying an injury into the match, Djokovic would have an edge to win in two sets.

    - Federer’s match today is his ninth match in 11 days, and four of those matches were 3-setters. That is a lot of tennis for someone recuperating from mono (even young Djokovic crashed out in the first round of his next tournaments after winning Indian Wells and Montreal). In particular, Federer will have to recover from a two hour plus, 3-setter match yesterday against the tough clay competitor Nalbandian. Even Djokovic admitted in his interview: “Federer) played a fantastic match (against Nalbandian). It was really impressive. I watched a little bit. Even Nalbandian had a great performance. But, you know, when you have such a great performance and you lose 6-2, 6-2, second and third set, your opponent had to be really, really great.”

    - Djokovic has been winning easily and quickly in Monte Carlo because he had an easy draw against players who are not their best on clay. Sam Querrey has never advanced beyond the second round of any clay event (mostly small ones) in his career. Ivan Ljubicic and Andy Murray have not been good on clay since at least the 2007 season.

If all things had been equal and Federer was 100% fit, I would have given the edge to Federer. Remember, it still took Djokovic longer to beat a mono-weakened Federer in Australia than it took Federer to beat a 100% fit Djokovic in the US Open finals. Federer has beaten Djokovic the only time they met on clay, and has a 5-2 winning record against the Serb. Djokovic was--in part--lucky to beat Federer twice, in Montreal and Melbourne:

    - In Montreal 2007, a rusty Federer (after his Wimbledon break) practically gift-wrapped the match to Djokovic. Roger made an uncharacteristic 57 unforced errors and dropped his service game while up 40-love serving for the first set (in comparison, he had 63 UFE in the five-setter against Tipsarevic in the Australian Open ). Djokovic managed to win two tie breakers to squeak through that three-setter Montreal match.

    - In Australian Open 2008, Federer crashed out in the semifinals to Djokovic, partly due to his illness. It was incredible that Federer was able to play until the semifinals with an energy-sapping viral infection--mononucleosis--and severe food poisoning (if Djokovic had mononucleosis, he would be taking a six-month 'injury time-out' and whining about his illness to a fawning press for eternity). Djokovic partly owes his victory to his countryman Tipsarevic for draining Federer’s energy reserves in their earlier five setter match. It was a one-two punch of Tipsarevic and Djokovic that finally killed a sick Federer. Even weakened, Federer was serving for the first set and went toe-to-toe with Djokovic in the third set. So Federer had chances to win both sets, at least. As well, Djokovic had been in Australia practicing on the new plexicushion surface (Hopman Cup) for a month to prepare for the Australian Open, while Federer was in bed sick like a dog multiple times with mononucleosis during at least 6 weeks between late December and early February.

In addition, Dhjokovic has not been all that consistent over the last six months, despite what the fawning press has written about him. Djokovic was humiliated in the Miami Masters when he lost his first match to a qualifier and tour rookie ranked No. 122. Since mid-October, Djokovic has won only 2 titles, while Roger has won three titles. In that period, Djokovic has also lost to 9 players: Nalbandian, Santoro, Ferrer, Gasquet, Nadal, Davydenko, Simon, Roddick, No. 122 ranked Kevin Anderson. Will Federer be his 10th conqueror?

  2. I am going to guess Djkovic 7-6, 6-4.

  3. Federer 6-4 3-6 6-4

  4. Federer easily.  Djoko will fold.

  5. breaking the monotony.....djokovic 5/7-6/4-7/5

  6. federer definitely, a lot of effort has been in his recent game.

    7-5 7-2

  7. Dr D ( Whats d for any way ) is obviously inhaling the right gas as I believe hes correct..

3 tough sets with Fed 65 % of probably winning it.

Id say hes got more to prove and more to lose..

  8. I think Federer will win in straight sets. But, it would be tough, something like 7-5, 7-6 or 7-6 6-3. Djokovic is a great player, but I have to give Federer the edge on clay and grass. Federer looks like a man on mission, so don't be surprised if he beats Nadal in the final.

  9. Probably Federer. He has had some great results on clay in the past, whereas Djokovic is not so proven on the surface. That said, Novak won their most recent encounter and Roger may still not be quite back to his old self. Still, I'll pick Roger in three.

  10. Djokovic over Feder in straight sets of 7-6, 7-6

  11. i dont know

    i would hope djokovic

    but anything can happen

  12. Willow, we all know who has the heart and soul of a champion by now. Go Rogi!

  13. A few days ago, I would have predicted Djokovic. But now I'll give the edge to Federer, simply because he's in a real fighting mood. I say he'll come from a set down to win.

  14. Definitely Federer

He's Back and now playing as good as always.

    Federer 7-5, 3-6. 6-2

  15. Federer

    7-5 3-6 6-4
