Djordje Drenovac powers Serbia to a 94-73 win over Canada: FIBA U-19 World Championship Recap
Small forward Djordje Drenovac spearheaded Serbia, who routed Canada 94-73 in a Group-F encounter on June 6, 2011. With this win, the Serbians carried their points tally to 12 and moved to the pole position in their group. So far
the Serbians have played seven games, out of which they have won five and lost two.
Djordje has been in supreme form in this tournament. After racking 14 points against the Chinese and the 19 against the Croatians in the previous games, the number 13 jersey led his side with 14 points, on a 70 percent shooting
from the field, in nearly 27 minutes of action. His contribution didn’t end there though as he also clutched six rebounds, and catered for one assist, steal and block each.
Serbia tipped off belligerently and put the Canadians under immense pressure from the very start. By the time, the first quarter ended, Serbia had already raced to 23-14 lead.
They carried the same momentum into the second period and dominated the Canadians. The one way traffic continued and the Serbians kept on finding inroads in the fragile Canadian back court, which was completely clueless on how
to stop the point leakage. When the teams headed to the locker room at the interval, the game was virtually decided as Serbia led the Canada by 47-26 – a mammoth 21 points difference.
After the break though, the Canadians put up a better effort, especially on the offense. However, it wasn’t just good enough, as they failed to clamp the lead down. The Serbians outperformed the Canadian yet again and sealed another
quarter in their favour by 72-46.
Staring at 26 point deficit, the Canadians tried to mount a fight back of sorts. They did not even come close in doing that, but what they did succeed in was tallying the most points by any team during a quarter. They also shored
up their defence and restricted the opposition to just 22 points during the frame. However, it was too little too late, as the Serbians registered the game in their favour with a 21-point margin.
Shooting guard Junior Lomomba led the Canadians with 14 points together with one rebound and one assist. During his 32 minutes stay, Lomomba shot 40 percent from the field including 50 percent from the three-point range.
