Dmitry Pirog defies all odds to retain WBO middleweight title against Nobuhiro Ishida - Boxing News
Dmitry Pirog, the WBO middleweight champion, successfully defended his title for the third consecutive time against Japanese sensation and former WBA World light middleweight champion, Nobuhiro Ishida, by collecting an impressive unanimous decision in a
12-round bout held on May 1, 2012.
The much anticipated bout was held at the jam-packed Sport Complex Krylatskoe arena situated in Moscow, Russia and the event was promoted by the duo of Kirill Pchelnikov of GT & KP Promotion and Art Pelullo of Banner Promotions.
Pirog, 31, defied all the odds and put forth the Russian boxing fanatics an impressive and startling performance. The odds were 50-50 between the two men since Ishida also possessed a resume that can easily intimidate some of the best men in the division.
Dmitry was entering in his career’s 20th bout and boasted a long win streak. The Russian proud has never lost even a single bout and grabbed his WBO title by collecting a fifth round technical knockout win over Daniel Jacobs.
Since then he has successfully defended it against Javier Francisco Maciel, Gennady Martirosyan and was about to do the same against Ishida. With 15 wins via knockout, Pirog did boast a flawless resume but his opponent Ishida had the huge experience advantage
in his gear.
The Japanese proud was in his 34th bout and boasted 24 wins just nine of them via knockout. Dmitry not only possessed a better KO ratio but also a perfect win ratio and above all the agility factor.
Ishida did possess the height advantage and during the whole bout he did use it optimally but at the end of the day Dmitry was the one who came out of the ring with the title round his waist.
After the impressive 119-109, 117-111, 120-108 score win, Dmitry commented, “A lot of work was put into preparing for this fight and I’m very pleased to have successfully defended my title. I was prepared for Ishida, but to his credit, he surprised me a
lot and I’ve learned a great deal from fighting him. Now I’m already looking forward to meeting my next opponent.”
Ishida, on the other hand, despite collecting a second consecutive loss, praised his opponent and remarked, “This is a champion. I’ve never been really hurt by my previous opponents, but Dmitry is truly a worthy champion, because he did manage to hurt me
during this fight. But I am very proud to have been in the same ring as him.”
With this win, Dmitry has boosted himself up in the world rankings and now has caught media’s due attention. Ishida, unfortunately, has collected his eighth career defeat and needs to come up with an effective plan to overcome the deficiencies.
