Dmitry Tursunov 4, Paul Capdeville 0; Russian wins round 1 – Malaysian Open 2011
Dmitry Tursunov captured his fourth win over the Chilean world No.104, Paul Capdeville, at the Malaysian Open 2011 opening round on Monday, 26thSeptember. Playing on hard indoor courts, the Russian dominated the Putra
Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, and took out his opponent 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in a long two hour and 14 minutes battle to enter the 2nd Stage of the ATP Tour 250 event.
Comparatively, the Russian had a clear advantage over the Chilean 28-year-old. Considering the fact that Tursunov had won 3 fixtures against the world No.104, the ranking disparity added to the detail which led to the Russian’s
win. Although Capdeville had a great 10 match run, bagging the Binghamton Challenger earlier this season, he could not break through the steel like Tursunov defence.
Tursunov opened up serving first and rolled down the scoreboard, 1-0. Serving out next, Capdeville levelled up and switched back the serve to the 28-year-old. Winning one more game each the two levelled up again at 2-2 with the
Russian to serve next.
Serving out game 5, the Russian ignited first, breaking the Chilean world No.104 and serving out game 7 to lead 5-2. Capdeville did try breaking the world No.41, however, could not make it through. With just one game required for
the set, Tursunov broke the Chilean once again, game 8, mustering the set 6-2 and led the match 1-0.
Stunning his rival in the first set, Tursunov went down hard in the second set. Serving for the first game, Tursunov went down straight without winning a point as the Chilean enjoyed 3 breakpoint wins followed by game 2 win. Leading
the set 2-0, Capdeville lost his first game of the set and served out next to lead 3-1.
Capdeville went amazing when he broke the world No.41 for the second time and served out the following game to uphold a 5-1 lead. Tursunov did pull back a game, yet could not break back and eventually lost as the Chilean served
out game 8 winning the set 6-2.
Fighting it out in the decider, Tursunov had a great comeback. Saving a breakpoint in the first game, the 28-year-old served out and led the set, 1-0. Levelling up with a win that proved to be his only one, Capdeville switched
the serve to return once again. Winning game 3, Tursunov started off with the surprising bombardment on his rival.
Breaking the Chilean world No.104, the Russian extended his lead to 3-1 before he served out the next game as well. With a marvellous serve-break-serve tactic, the 28-year-old clinched the final three games encapsulating the set
6-1 and the match 2-1.
With an amazing comeback, the Russian moves on ahead where he will be facing Belgian David Goffin for a spot in the quarterfinal round.
