Dmitry Tursunov outplays Albert Ramos in opening round – Kremlin Cup 2011
Dmitry Tursunov, Russian World No.40, outgunned his first round Spanish competitor, Albert Ramos, world No. 71, 7-6(5), 6-4, in an hour and 31 minutes at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, Russia on Tuesday, 18th October.
Although the 28-year-old higher ranked Russian had all the advantages, Ramos did pull off a great offence, however, could not end hold up his defence for long.
Tursunov ignited the match serving out the first game of the match, 1-0, with a triple game point winner. Ramos, world No.71, served next and levelled up the scores as he bagged game 2, 1-1. Ranked world No.40, Russian right-hander
went on to serve out game 3 with a super forehand down-the-line to extend his lead to 2-1.
Ranked higher than his rival, Spaniard, Tursunov capitalized over the 23-year-old and broke the Spaniard, game 4, 3-1, to further lead the set and served again. Pocketing another win the Russian was swirling through the set and
was left with just two more wins to take out the set.
However, the match twisted as Ramos made a remarkable comeback, though he failed to clinch a win. With a game win each, the scores now settled at 5-2 before the Spaniard struck back. Serve-break-serving next, the 23-year-old went
on bagging three straight games and cutting down the lead to 5-5, level-up.
Breaking each other next the two forced the set in a tiebreaker with Tursunov to serve for the first point. Although Ramos, In the start, had all the control, however, Russian 28-year-old made a astounding recovery surprising the
Spaniard with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker and the set 7-6(5) to lead the match by a set to none.
With the first set going in his favour, Tursunov kept the pressure and ended the match early. As the Spaniard took the first serve for set 2, Tursunov broke the world No.71 on his opening serve and led the set again by serving
out game two, 2-0. Finally scoring his first win, game 3, Ramos rolled down his side of the scoreboard and stood to return again.
Extending his lead to 3-1, Tursunov kept the pressure on bagging all served games. As the two won games on respective serves, the Spaniard was unable to break back and level up at any time. In the end, with scores at 5-4, the 28-year-old
higher ranked rival stormed away winning set two, 6-4, and the match in straight sets to qualify in round 2 of the ATP World Tour 250 event.
Through to the next stage, Tursunov will now go on against the winner of the match between Frenchman Julien Benneteau and Russian Evgeny Donskoy in the second round.
