Dmitry Tursunov stuns David Ferrer to enter round three – Barcelona Open 2013
Russian qualifier, Dmitry Tursunov, surprised everyone by upsetting the top seed, David Ferrer, in a three-set thriller at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2013 on Wednesday. He summed up a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 victory against the local number one to power into
the third round at this clay court tournament held in Spain.
The Russian underdog re-ignited his old spark and eventually outclassed Ferrer with a breadstick. As a result, the top ranked local star exited from his opening round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series event.
“It wasn't Ferrer's best match. He didn't play his best tennis,” assessed the Russian in a courtside interview after bagging the match. “He had the advantage over me because he's been playing on clay. But I played very quickly and I didn't make it easy for
him. Ferrer was the favourite based on surface and ranking. It was a match where there were a lot of opportunities for both players.”
Currently ranked 66th in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Tursunov made a thunderous start into this match. He drew the first blood in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. The Russian levelled the scores in the sixth game but
broke again, eventually taking a 4-3 lead. Despite squandering his edge again, Tursunov stayed focused and got the breakthrough in the 11th game, eventually clicking the opener with a 7-5 success.
The world number four rebounded in the proceeding set. He suffered the first blow in the opening game but recovered in the fourth game. Ferrer capitalised on another break chance in the last game and eventually grabbed the equaliser by winning six games
to three.
Tursunov re-gained his strength in the deciding set. He got the coveted break in the second game and took the initial lead. The Russian lost his serve in the very next game but went berserk, subsequently clinching the decider with a breadstick.
This was Ferrer’s first match after enduring a thigh injury at the Sony Open Tennis in Miami where he cruised to the final showdown (bowed out to Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray).
