  1. I can tell you what would happen if this was in NJ. I can't say for your state. First off, officers here have a way to tell if there is valid insurance on the car to begin with. I assume they cant there  because they didn't catch it. Here the car would have been impounded and you left on the side of the road to wait for a ride. The do NOT give you a ride even if you had an infant with you. Anyway, The car (if impounded) would be towed to an impound yard where the fun would really begin. The only way to get a "release" from the impound yard would be for your sister to come there and do it. Then all the charges must be made in cash only. Then the cost of the repairs. Now the thing that is on your side is that the cops didn't know there wasn't insurance on the car. And since you don't know who hit you there is no reason for them to investigate wheather or not you have insurance. So the out come is, if you don't persue getting the car paid through insurance you don't get in trouble. You do however have a car you need to fix out of pocket unless it's totalled. Then just have it brought to the junkyard. Your sis would get in trouble for lending you the car willfully without insurance. She would get a ticket and you would get a ticket even though at the time you didn't know it. Actually you'd get more than one ticket. you'd get 1. no insurance 2. failure to provide valid documents 3. operating a vehicle with no new ownership (because the title was signed for new ownership it can't be driven) My advice is consider the car a loss if it's totalled or you're gonna have to pay to have it fixed. Whatever you do, don't admit to the cops that you didn't have insurance. And don't bother trying to get insurance to pay it because Insurance will absolutely not pay with no coverage and you will be the one paying out for the tickets.

  2. I agree with entidtil.

  3. I may not be understanding your question correctly but If the car was not insured when the accident happened, you cannot now go out and buy coverage for an accident that has already happened.  You are going to have to pay for the damages to the car yourself.  You will probably also get a ticket for driving an unregistered car and an uninsured car.  You may lose your drivers license too.  Explain it all to the judge but I doubt he will be a bit symathetic.  After all is said and done of course you can buy the car, get the car in your name and buy insurance for it.  BTW,,,,There are 3 types of "single Mothers", Divorced, widowed and never been married Mothers.    None of the 3 is anyone elses fault or responsibility
