DnD for Beginners?

Alright, I want to play DnD but I don't know how to play really. I tried it a bit at this store but then I couldn't go anymore cause of my parents. Now i want to know if theres any groups in Long Island that help newcomers to DnD and are friendly. Thanks

my friends play, but won't let me play in their group (they had too many people all ready)

so, I went out and bought the books and taught myself

I'm not from the Long Island area but if you use Yahoo! Groups and look for local gaming groups in your area under the category Role Playing Games.  Hopefully you will find a friendly and mature group of players to teach you D&D.  Good Luck
