  1. Don't you have to be actually part of a tribe to get help in that...?

  2. Blood tests are old hat.  Your blood has DNA, but so does your hair, your skin, your bones, your saliva etc.  Most of these companies  send you a kit and you swab the inside of your cheek with a device sort of like a q tip.

Y DNA is passed solely from father to son.

Mitochondrial DNA is passed from mother to both sons and daughters but only the daughter passes it own to her children.

Most of your DNA is autosomal.  You get it 50-50 from both parents.  It is the only DNA that relates a female to her father or a male to his paternal grandmother or maternal grandfather and the spouses of his many times great paternal grandmothers and the spouses of his many times great maternal grandfathers.

FamilyTree DNA is the oldest and largest but they are not doing ethnicity testing now.

Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation is another site.  They don't send you results but it will eventually be online and it might take 6 month. They are trying to contract a company to interpret the results.  They plan within a year to start using autosomal DNA for genealogy testing.

Someone ask a question about Dnatribes.Com that does use autosomal for ethnic testing.

  3. First of all you have to be a member of a Federally Recognized Tribe or Nation to qualify for tuition assistance.  To become a member of a Federally Recognized you have to prove you have an ancestor on the base roll of the Tribe or Nation you are trying to join.

Example:  If you wanted to join the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma you would have to prove you descend from someone on the Dawes Roll.  For the Eastern Band of Cherokee it is the Baker Roll, and for the Eastern Band you have to have a blood quantum of at least 1/8 to qualify.

Each tribe has their own requirements for membership and you would have to check with the particular tribe you are trying to join.

In addition no Federally Recognized Tribe or Nation accepts DNA testing as your sole proof of Native ancestry.  Some tribes will accept DNA testing to prove you descend from the generation before you, but you still have to have your proof in the form of certified documents IE: birth, marriage certificates.

If you want to know more about DNA testing I have done quite a bit of research and posted my finding on my website.

  4. You only have part correct.

You might be part Native American, but dna testing is not accepted by tribes as eligibility to join the tribe. For tribal enrollment, you have to trace your ancestry.. and your ancestors have to have been previously enrolled on known listings.  Many persons will have actual dna background.. but the ancestor choose to not be enrolled in the tribe, or the application was not approved.  You must be a certain percentage to even apply, and that does NOT insure that you get free money.

Many tribes are trying to limit enrollment, tighter than before.

  5. If you are female, you only carry your mother's mtdna, and her mother's mtdna, and her mother's mtdna etc.,etc.,etc. So that will only show your mother's lineage.

You do not carry the Y-dna of your father, his father, his father, etc.,etc.,etc. It is the markers on the Y-dna that are used for ancestry so it would have to be your father, father's brother, paternal grandfather, your brother or a male cousin from your father's brother, etc. Who would have to do the test for you. It is not a blood test, a simple mouth swab is used.

Human cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes: 22 pairs of autosomes, and one pair of s*x chromosomes. Females carry a pair of X chromosomes that can swap, or recombine, similar regions of DNA during meiosis. However, males harbor one X chromosome and one Y chromosome, and significant recombination between these dissimilar s*x chromosomes does not occur. Therefore, the non-recombining region of the Y chromosome (NRY) remains largely unchanged over many generations, directly passed from father to son, son to grandson, and so on, along with genetic variations in the NRY that may be present. Scientists can use genetic variations, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), on the Y chromosome as markers of human ancestry and migration.

Family Tree DNA are testing for Native American Ancestry,

  6. you can try here.

  7. before you rush out and get a test; check to see what accreditation and such are needed by the lab to make the test valid.

  8. THERE IS NO FREE COLLEGE FOR BEING 'PART' NATIVE AMERICAN.

Now, if you are an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe, you may be eligible to apply for scholarships and grants reserved for American Indians.  The funding is not guaranteed.  Being an enrolled tribal member only makes you eligible to apply.  As an enrolled tribal member you might also be eliglble to attend Haskell Indian Nations University which is not free but is low cost.
