It may sound a dumb question but say if you had 4 50watt 12volt halogen lamps on a fitting would that consume the same amount of power as 4 50 watt 240volt lamps - I am just asking because the Halogen ones are 12volt low voltage (i.e. transformer drops from 240v to 12volt)

  1. 12 volts

  2. No, 50 Watts at 240Vs would create a draw of 0.20833A or 208mA

50 Watts at 12V would create a much larger draw closer to about 4A, you also haven't considered the parasitic loss from the inductance from the transformer and the heat created.

  3. The watt (symbol: W) is the SI derived unit of power, equal to one joule of energy per second. It measures a rate of energy use or production

  4. W=IxV where W = Watts, I = Current & V= Voltage, therefore the higher the voltage the less current will be drawn, 12V is 20times less than 240V so the current drawn will be 20 times greater (Theoretically).

  5. are we talkin transformers rectifiers ac or dc................
